What moon phase is it on your chosen date?
The finder shows a phase name and the percentage of the Moon’s visible disk illuminated at local noon on your selected date. Below that result, the next four lunar-quarter events give the calculated instants of new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter in your browser’s time zone.
Use the date field to look ahead or revisit a journal entry. “Back to today” restores the current local date. The daily phase name is an approximate label for a changing cycle; use the quarter-event times when you need the actual instant rather than a daily summary.
How to read phase and illumination
Waxing means the visible illuminated portion is increasing; waning means it is decreasing. The same illumination percentage can occur on either side of full moon, so a percentage alone does not tell you which direction the cycle is moving. “First quarter” names a point in the cycle, not a disk that is only 25% illuminated.

A worked example: planning a lunar reflection
Suppose you want to write a full moon review next month. Choose a date near the beginning of that month and find “Full moon” in the next-quarter list. Record the displayed date, time, and time zone. Then choose a nearby interval that suits your schedule for the actual writing.
When you return to the finder on that day, the noon illumination may be close to 100% without matching the exact instant listed below. Those are different measurements of time, not necessarily a contradiction. A personal ritual can use a convenient evening; an observation log should record the time you actually looked.
Calculation method and limits
The tool uses Astronomy Engine to calculate the Sun–Moon phase angle, illumination, and quarter events. The daily name groups the phase angle into eight approximate segments. The displayed percentage is calculated for local noon, while the event list starts from the beginning of the selected local day.
It does not calculate moonrise, moonset, cloud cover, or visibility from your address. The decorative moon symbol is not a rendering of the Moon’s orientation in your sky. A full moon phase does not by itself tell you that the Moon is above your horizon.
The phase event is shared worldwide, but its clock time and sometimes its calendar date differ by time zone. If two calendars disagree by a day, compare their time zones and whether they show a daily label or the exact event. Your browser’s zone comes from your device settings.
Can you use this without following a spiritual practice?
Yes. Use it as a date reference for a sky journal or to learn the sequence of phases. The reflection prompts are optional editorial suggestions. NASA explains the physical phase cycle; astronomy does not establish the spiritual meanings assigned to it.
